Sian
Davey

Beginning her photographic career in 2014, Sian draws from her experiences as a mother and psychotherapist. With her family and community central to her work, Sian’s beautiful images are set against a backdrop of ethereal light in the Devonshire countryside. A study of rural life, motherhood, and her relationship with her children, Sian’s images are full of intimacy and emotional connection – there’s an understanding between herself and her subjects.

Describing her work as “an investigation of the psychological landscapes of both herself and those around her” Sian’s pictures are a collection of observations and beautiful portraits - moments of family life and the passing of time.

Sian’s poignant body of work is a personal story through which she explores her relationship with her daughters Martha and Alice. Photographed across different projects, we, the viewer, feel their emotional connection. On the journey to adulthood, Sian’s teenage daughter Martha allows her access to her world. Photographing Martha and her friends, Sian creates images of an idyllic childhood, capturing the freedoms and excitement of youth and the complexities and vulnerability of adolescence as Martha grows into a young woman.

Sian’s photographs of her youngest daughter Alice are taken from an early age and over a number of years. A journey of love and acceptance captured through Sian’s lens, the beautiful observations of the little girl were published in her exceptional and emotive book ‘Looking for Alice’. The sisters share many tender moments of joy, comfort, and connection throughout Sian’s important body of work, and it feels such a natural fit to showcase a personal edit of some of our favourite images of the two girls together.
